At Home in the Universe, detail
While working on At Home in the Universe, I was reminded of the moment I first witnessed the raw beauty of Paterson Ewen's monumental paintings on plywood. Paterson gouged into massive sheets of plywood with an electric router, somewhat like carving into a Japanese woodblock, but much larger and much louder. He painted the plywood and strategically attached metal or chains. Lifting the chains and letting them bang against the surface of the plywood mimicked the sound of thunder.
